CZOP National Campaign Submits Memorandum to Election Commission Urging Protection of Children’s Rights During Elections

Nov 17,Kathmandu, Nepal — The Children as Zones of Peace (CZOP) National Campaign has formally submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of Nepal, calling for strong enforcement of legal provisions that prohibit the use of children and schools in election-related activities.

The memorandum was handed over today to Acting Chief Election Commissioner Hon. Ram Prasad Bhandari by a delegation led by CZOP President Tilottam Paudel.

Speaking during the meeting, the Campaign emphasized that with the upcoming election scheduled for Fagun 21, it is crucial to uphold national and international commitments regarding child rights. The memorandum urged the Commission to ensure effective monitoring so that no political party involves children below 18 years of age in rallies, campaigns, publicity events, or any other election activities, as mandated by existing child-related laws and the Election Code of Conduct.

President Paudel highlighted that CZOP has been working since 2000 for the protection and promotion of child rights, and continues to advocate for the principle that children must be safeguarded as zones of peace, especially during politically sensitive periods such as elections.

In response, Acting Chief Election Commissioner Bhandari reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to preventing the misuse of children during elections. He emphasized that the Election Commission remains vigilant and strictly adheres to the Code of Conduct, adding that schools and children must not be used for political purposes under any circumstances.

He further stated that compared to past elections, the Commission is prepared to carry out more effective monitoring this year and called for cooperation from political parties, civil society organizations, and all stakeholders to ensure a child-safe election environment. Bhandari also expressed appreciation for civil society’s continued engagement and contribution toward strengthening democratic processes.

The CZOP National Campaign expressed gratitude for the Commission’s assurances and stressed that protecting children from political exploitation is essential to upholding their rights and ensuring a peaceful, child-friendly electoral environment.
