On May 17 and 18, 2026, under the coordination of the National Campaign for Children as Zones of Peace, a monitoring visit was conducted in holding centers located in Nagarjun, Kirtipur, Banepa, and Bhaktapur regarding the condition of families and children forcibly evicted from various squatter settlements in the Kathmandu Valley. Representatives from the National Human Rights Commission, civil society organizations, and other concerned stakeholders participated in the monitoring process.

During the monitoring, basic arrangements such as food and drinking water were found to be relatively satisfactory. However, several serious concerns were identified, particularly regarding the uncertain future of children’s education, inadequate nutritious food for lactating mothers, young children, and sick individuals, and growing mental stress and despair among displaced families due to insecurity about their future and the wellbeing of their children.

The monitoring team also observed a lack of sensitive and humane behavior from the state despite its responsibility to protect and support vulnerable children and families during times of crisis.

The National Campaign for Children as Zones of Peace has urged the Government of Nepal and all concerned stakeholders to take immediate steps toward a sustainable and humane solution while ensuring the protection of children’s rights, including access to education, health, nutrition, safety, and dignified rehabilitation.
